The Datai Langkawi, nestled in the heart of one of the most beautiful rainforests of Asia, and just a few meters from the Andaman Sea.
It is a place you would not believe exists if it weren’t for its rooms and villas you can check yourself into for a night… But it is real, all of it, from the location of the hotel deep within a 10-million-year-old rainforest to its architectural details first imagined by Kerry Hill in 1993, and then renovated by Didier Lefort for a tip-to-toe makeover. Our coup de cœur were the low-key, but wonderful wood-crafted rooms dotted within the tropical foliage or directly on the sands of Datai Bay. Most have heavy Balinese-style furniture and polished dark wood floors, adding to the Datai’s signature hushed atmosphere and intimacy. In this setting, the possibilities are endless, from sunbathing by the main pool to treks in the rainforest for sightings of monkeys, geckos or even Sunda colugos. The hotel is also a world-class culinary destination. At the Gulai House, with its traditional Malay decor, the menu is kept strictly local while elsewhere, the Pavilion, set atop 30-metre stilts with far-reaching views of the rainforest, serves Thai specialities. Other restaurants include the Dining Room by the main pool, a beach bar and the lobby lounge where perfectly mixed cocktails are served to a soothing soundtrack that alternates between live jazz and laid-back piano. After its 12-month renovation, a new chapter awaits at the Datai Langkawi, and boy it looks like a promising one...
